Programmes

Mechanical Engineering

Mechanical Engineering deals with the properties of steam and thermal energy. Boilers, Steam engines, refrigerators, air conditioners, heat engines and IC engines are the application of this subject. Material strength and metallurgy covers the application and selection of engineering materials and heat treatment process to improve the strength and wear resistance properties of the materials. The subject Machine Design deals with the designing of machine parts by considering the force. Various manufacturing techniques and fabrication methods are studied in manufacturing process. Advanced production process deals with the modern machines like CNC, FMS and Robotics, apart from the conventional machines like lathe, grinding, milling etc. Automobile engineering  covers the entire vehicle mechanism and modern development in motor Vehicle industry. Power plant engineering teaches various power production units and to calculate the power consumption. One of the major areas is the machine drawing and the study of engineering graphics. General workshop and Advance machine tool laboratory help the students to practice in various machine tools as well as skill development. Material testing Lab and Electrical technology labs help the students to practice testing the materials and connecting the electrical equipments. Hydraulic lab and Heat engine labs provide the practical knowledge about these areas. There are provisions to practice Servicing and maintenance of mechanical devices in the laboratory concerned. Computer aided design covers the areas of computer drafting in machine designing and drawing. In plant training and industrial visits helps the students understand the real time situations in industry.

Job prospects

Diploma in Mechanical Engineering is the essential qualification for being placed in middle level managerial jobs like supervisors in industry. Machine tool industry, Automobile industry, Process industries, Fabrication field, Power plants, Rubber manufacturing industry, Material testing laboratories, Cadd design centers, Paper industry, Railway, Shipyard, are some of the fields where the mechanical diploma engineers can be placed. Both the Central and the State govts are providing job facilities for diploma holders in mechanical engineering as workshop instructors in technical education institutions, draughtsman in various departments, Legal metallurgy, VSSC etc.

Prospects for higher studies

The diploma students can join directly into the third semester of B.Tech after passing the lateral entry  examinations. There is provision for studying part time degree in B.Tech in certain colleges
